A man detected driving at 187 kilometres per hour in a 100km/h zone has been banned from driving for two years.
At Galway District Court, Judge Vincent Deane imposed the mandatory two year disqualification on Nicolae Onus (40), with an address at 78 Mullán Mór, Tuam Road, Galway, after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.
Garda Shane Lambe told the court he was carrying out a speed checkpoint at Garraun, Oranmore, on May 5, 2024 when he detected the Audi A8 driven by the accused travelling at 187 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.
The court was told Onus had 12 previous convictions including eight for theft related offences and one for dangerous driving.
Defence barrister, Keith Concannon BL, said his client was a construction worker and had been asked by his employer to go to a site in Oranmore and pick up temporary railings that had fallen over and were obstructing traffic.
The loss of a driving license would have a “seismic effect” on his client, a father of three, whose wife is due to give birth.
Judge Vincent Deane imposed a two-year driving ban and a €300 fine and agreed to postpone the date of disqualification to February 10, 2026.
