Man arrested after attempted armed robbery in Woodlawn

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A 22 year old man has been arrested after a suspected attempted armed robbery at Woodlawn.
The Garda air support unit was called in this morning after the incident, in which what’s believed to have been a firearm was produced.
The suspect entered through a rear door at Woodlawn Post office at around 8am and allegedly demanded money from a female staff member.
However, the safe at the premises is on a time-lock, and she was unable to access the cash.
The suspect fled the scene, and a search operation got underway.
A 22 year old was arrested a short time later with help from the Garda air support unit.
He’s being detained at Loughrea Garda station, where he can be questioned up until tomorrow morning.

As expectations increase that the easing of Covid-19 restrictions will be recommended today, a Galway city venue owner says it’s hard to be confident as businesses still cannot plan too far in advance.

NPHET meets this morning to assess how restrictions could be eased and when.

However a final decision on any plan will be made at Cabinet tomorrow, and an announcement is expected afterwards.

Gary Monroe of Monroe’s Tavern on Dominick Street says while the easing of restrictions is welcome, the difficulties for the hospitality sector will continue.

Two arrested in connection with major drugs seizure in Galway city

Gardaí in Galway have arrested two men following the seizure of €85,500 worth of cash and drugs.

As part of Operation Tara, shortly after 8pm on Tuesday Galway Divisional Drugs Unit carried out a search at a house in the Ballybane area of Galway City.

Over €53,000 worth of suspected cocaine, €25,000 in cash along with smaller amounts of cannabis herb and MDMA were seized.

Last night two men, both in their late teens were arrested in connection with the seizure.

They were brought to the Regional Garda Headquarters in Galway for questioning under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Act.

New online platform offers free courses to migrants and refugees in Galway

A new online platform has been set up to provide free access to education and training courses for people from refugee and migrant backgrounds in Galway.

SaorED is a collaborative initiative between three Irish non-profit organisations Doras, New Horizon, and Dignity Partnership.

Available online at saored.com, the courses aim to provide free access to a range of entry-level and advanced courses.

John Lannon of Doras explained how the courses will help participants access further education and work.
