Man (71) set for trial on sex assault charges Man (71) set for trial on sex assault charges

A 71-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a female at fast food restaurants in Galway will have a trial date set later this year.

The man appeared at Galway Circuit Court on four charges of sexual assault, contrary to section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) Amendment Act.

The charges allege he sexually assaulted a female at Supermacs Eyre Square, twice on different occasions at Eddie Rockets, Eglinton Street, and Sea Point Casino, on dates unknown between January and December 1993.

The charges concern the same alleged victim and the case is subject to reporting restrictions.

Defence solicitor, John Martin, said his client was unable to attend court as he was undergoing medical treatment.

Judge Brian O’Callghan adjourned the case to December 2, when a trial date is expected to be set.

The man had been returned for a trial after being served with a book of evidence at Galway District Court.

Garda Maria Freeley confirmed service of the book, which contained four charges.

Judge Fiona Lydon delivered the alibi warning, telling the accused that if his defence in any way relies on an alibi, then details should be supplied to the prosecution within 14 days.

Judge Lydon made the order returning the accused for trial and granted legal aid applications for Mr Martin and one junior counsel going forward.
