Making a stand – Connacht’s modernised stadium is revealed

Connacht Rugby’s revamped stadium in Galway City is scheduled to be unveiled this coming January.
And with just months to go to the planned official opening of the new North Stand, the arrival of a high-profile new head coach, Stuart Lancaster, has helped the club to sell nearly 3,600 season tickets – its highest in almost decade.
A Connacht spokesperson has confirmed that construction of the new Dexcom Stadium – formerly known as the Sportsground – was on course to be completed and handed over by the construction company by the end of this December.
Connacht will then spend a few weeks fitting it out and passing necessary health and safety requirements with a view to it being ready to host a home inter-provincial tie at College Road against Leinster on January 24, 2026.
Connacht’s first competitive home match of the men’s 2025/2026 season is Saturday, September 27 against Italian side, Benetton.
But local rugby fans have already had a glimpse of the new stand taking shape during the Women’s Interprovincial Championships held at the venue in August.
Capacity at the venue is currently 3,928 while construction is ongoing. The new stand will have a capacity of roughly 6,500 give or take, bringing overall capacity at Dexcom Stadium up to about 10,400.
