IN the nearly 60-year history of the Connacht Club senior football championship, four Galway teams have achieved provincial glory on more than one occasion.
Corofin (10), Killererin (2), Fr. Griffin’s (2) and Salthill-Knocknacarra (2) are all multiple winners of the Shane McGettigan Cup and on Sunday next at Dr Hyde Park (1pm), Maigh Cuilinn will be bidding to join that elite company.
Having conquered the west in 2022 with a 0-13 to 0-6 victory over Tourlestrane of Sligo, the Galway champions will be bidding to emulate that feat against a seasoned St Brigid’s outfit from Roscommon.
The big question surrounding the build-up to the showpiece of Connacht club football is whether county player Peter Cooke will be available for the first time in Maigh Cuilinn’s provincial campaign.
To date, the Galway champions have recorded convincing wins over Shamrock Gaels of Sligo and Leitrim Gaels but face a much sterner test against the pre-match favourites on Sunday.
