MAIGH Cuilinn’s epic campaign will continue into the New Year as the Galway champions saw off Tourlestrane of Sligo in last Sunday’s Connacht Club Senior Football Final.
Heavily fancied going into the game, Don Connellan’s side were patient and kept things tight in the opening 30 minutes as they played into the face of a stiff breeze. Maigh Cuilinn led by just a point at the break, 0-4 to 0-3, but there was an air of inevitability about the result early in the second half as they began to wear down the Tourlestrane rearguard and pick off points as their opponents struggled to keep up.
Connellan might give his men a few days of well-earned rest in the wake of this first senior provincial title but it won’t be too long before they’re back at it as they get ready to face the winners of this weekend’s Ulster final between Kilcoo and Glen in early January.
If Maigh Cuilinn delivered a performance that was off key against Strokestown in the Connacht semi-final, this one was much more of a return to form. With Tourlestrane throwing plenty of men behind the ball, the Galwaymen were kept to just four Dessie Conneely frees in the first half. It was typical Maigh Cuilinn fare in the second half, however, as they put pressure on the Tourlestrane kickout and worked superbly together to create scoring chances.
