Loughrea 1-23
Cappataggle 0-18
Ivan Smyth at Kenny Park
LOUGHREA struck 1-7 without reply in a 16 minute spell during the second half as they booked their spot in the quarter finals with a round to spare at Kenny Park on Saturday.
After Ja Mannion fired over for Cappataggle to level the game at 0-16 apiece, Loughrea’s late flurry of scores ensures they are the only side in the Senior A hurling Championship to have claimed maximum points in their four games.
Their goal proved to be the tie’s most important score and it arrived in the 43rd minute when Cappataggle’s Patrick Egan received a short puckout but he took too long in surveying his options. Neil Keary blocked the corner back down and raced through on goal before finishing beyond James Skehill.
Even before that green flag, Loughrea were beginning to turn the screw after a Neil Keary free and a Martin McManus point helped them move 0-18 to 0-16 in front. However, the goal ensured Loughrea seized the momentum as Neil Keary (two), Brian Keary, Anthony Burns and Dylan Shaughnessy all found the target with Tommy Kelly’s side showcasing their impressive strength indepth in attack.
