Lord Mayor of Dublin to address Galway county council meeting

The Lord Mayor of Dublin will address Galway county councillors at this afternoon’s meeting of the local authority.

Naoise Ó Muirí, a native of Spiddal, was elected Lord Mayor in June 2012, and is the 343rd Lord Mayor of Dublin.

Galway Bay fm news reports he’s currently on engagements in the Spiddal area, and this afternoon will make an address at the monthly meeting of the county council which is taking place in Oughterard.

Tom Welby requested the Lord Mayor of Dublin’s presence at today’s meeting, which is one of his last during his term as Mayor of County Galway.

Workers at Corrib Oil station in Ballinasloe to take further strike action

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Workers at Corrib Oil filling station in Ballinasloe are to take further strike action tomorrow.

They’ll take to the picket line from 6.30am until 10pm – over the company’s alleged refusal to recognise their right to be represented by a union.

Mandate Trade Union claims Corrib Oil has refused to honour a pre-Christmas offer to engage with them.

It follows a one-day strike held last month.

Galway Bay fm contacted Corrib Oil about tomorrow’s action, but it has not commented

John Carty of Mandate says workers don’t want to strike – but management is leaving them no choice.

Tuam student wins award for outstanding business and accounting Leaving Cert results

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The inaugural N17 Plaza Business Award has been presented to University of Galway student, Eimhin Mulligan.

The award, exclusive to St Jarlath’s College in Tuam, is aimed at encouraging students to pursue careers related to business.

Eimhin, who did the Leaving Cert last year, excelled in both business and accounting exams

He’s now studying for a Commerce Degree at University of Galway.

Supermac’s MD, Pat McDonagh, presented the cash prize and a plaque at a function at the secondary school campus in Tuam

Appeal to An Bord Pleanala over apartment block at Ballymoneen Road

Galway Bay fm newsroom – An Appeal has been lodged with An Bord Pleanala against approval for an apartment development at Ballymoneen Road.

The project, led by Crescent Co. Ownership, would include 17 apartments in a mix of single and two-bed units.

The three-story building would be located on a site near the existing Portacarron estate and the Western Distributor Road junction.

The plans were given the green light by city planners earlier this month.

An appeal has now been lodged with An Bord Pleanala – with a decision due in May.
