Turloughmore 2-18
Castlegar 1-10
Alan Dooley at Pearse Stadium
A strong second half showing from Turloughmore comfortably saw off the challenge of Castlegar at Pearse Stadium last Saturday evening in Senior A Group 1, as Francis Forde’s men began their quest for an elusive county title with a decisive victory.
On a wet and dreary evening borrowed from mid-October, this contest produced a flurry of first quarter goals and at times in the opening period looked capable of remaining a competitive affair throughout, but when Turloughmore moved up a gear or two after the break, Castlegar’s attacking threat faded badly, which will be a worry for new manager Liam Turley.
Turloughmore outscored their opponents by 0-11 to 0-3 in that second half and could well have added three more goals to their total but for some heroic defending and the intervention of the crossbar late on, which denied Sean Linnane a major on his welcome return to action from injury. Seán Loftus chipped in with an impressive six points from play as all six of the winner’s starting forwards registered a score.
The first of those was a fifth minute goal when the ball squirted out of a ruck close to the Castlegar posts and fell to veteran full forward Fergal Moore, who gleefully rifled a shot to the net. Within a minute Castlegar were back on level terms, though, after Darragh Neary’s clever pick up and pass to Donal Barry created space before Enda Concannon’s shot was saved only for Oisín Connolly to force in the rebound.
