Lively Galway get job done against defensive Donegal

Galway 1-11

Donegal 1-2

By DARREN KELLY IN LIFFORD

ANOTHER job done and another step towards the Holy Grail! Galway’s senior ladies footballers delivered their place at the business end of the All-Ireland championship with victory over Donegal last Saturday guaranteeing a home quarter-final in three weeks’ time.

The hosts put up a stubborn resistance before Ailbhe Davoren’s 25th minute goal provided Galway’s breakthrough. Two spells of four points each during the second period ensured a 13th consecutive win in 2025.

If the season was split into four parts, this was part three passed. Galway are Division 2 league champions, Connacht senior champions, and now group winners on the All-Ireland stage. However, their year will ultimately be judged on what happens next.

That’s a conversation for another day as the girls in maroon again overcame defensive opposition before picking them apart. Donegal, to their credit, laboured immensely hard to restrict Galway’s opportunities during the first half but there was only so long that would work.

The quiet surroundings of Naomh Padraig GAA in Lifford was a surprising choice for a championship showdown. That shouldn’t take away from the local volunteers who looked after everyone so well from players to supporters to media.

But if ladies football is serious about promoting their sport outside of All-Ireland Final day, a small club pitch with no media facilities or shelter is not good enough. There was no sense of occasion and bar the TG4 cameras, this felt like a challenge match to just get out of the way.

In fairness to Galway and Donegal, they knew this was much more important than that. The Tribeswomen, following their victory over Tipperary last week, would coast into the last eight with a win.

This was the Tir Conaill women’s first outing since their Ulster Final loss to Armagh five weeks previously.  The green and yellow are not the force of recent years and only seven of the team that drew with Kerry in 2024 started. Only four of the squad were 24 or over.

However, they had a game plan to frustrate Galway and kept their concession rate down to just three scores by the break.
