Little time for Moycullen, Dunmore and Clifden to rest on their laurels

IT was a clean sweep for Galway clubs in the quarter-finals of the provincial championships over the weekend, but Moycullen, Dunmore MacHales and Clifden have little time to rest on their laurels.
Dessie Conneely was the key man in Moycullen’s stunning 3-18 to 1-12 win over Westport at McHale Park; Matthew Redington took centre stage for Dunmore in their 1-10 to 0-8 victory over St Molaise Gaels in the intermediate championship; while Ger Gibbons took the plaudits in Clifden juniors’ 1-10 to 0-10 success over Carrigallen.
All three Galway champions are out again this weekend with Moycullen having ‘home’ advantage this time against Strokestown of Roscommon in the Connacht senior semi-final at Tuam Stadium (1:30pm) on Sunday.
The fixture is unfortunately a direct clash with the Galway hurling final at Pearse Stadium, but that will hardly perturb the Moycullen supporters who saw their team wipe the floor with Westport thanks to a top-quality display in Castlebar.
It is expected that Peter Cooke, who missed that game due to illness, will be recovered in time to line out against Strokestown, a scenario which will cushion the loss of defender David Wynne who was dismissed in the dying moments against Westport.
Winning a first county title in 20 years when edging out North Roscommon rivals Boyle at Hyde Park in late October, Strokestown’s passage to championship glory came as something as a surprise despite the club’s tradition which had seen them capture ten senior crowns by the end of 2002.
