LISTEN: Owen Ward’s address to the Mayoral Reception held in his honour

Galway Bay FM Newsroom – A mayoral reception has taken place in the city to celebrate the academic achievements of Owen Ward and his contribution to education.

Owen is a native of the westside area of the city and a member of the Irish Traveller community.

Despite being an early school leaver with no Junior Cert, Owen completed the NUI Galway access programme and later graduated with a degree and masters in post-primary education.

He currently serves as a programme coordinator at the Access Centre at NUI Galway.

Owen Ward is also a committee member of Údarás na hOllscoile – and is the first Irish Traveller to be elected to a university governing authority in Ireland.

Mayor Mike Cubbard made a presentation to Owen Ward at the socially distanced ceremony in Leisureland, and said the young man has gone above and beyond to ensure everyone has a chance in education.

One thousand fewer people across Galway to receive PUP this week

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A thousand fewer people in Galway will receive the Pandemic Unemployment Payment this week.

There are now 14,683 people in receipt of the payment – compared to 15,684 this time last week.

Nationally, almost 18,000 fewer people will receive the PUP this week.

In total, 267,000 people will get the payment at a total cost of just under 79 million euro,

The sector with the highest number of people in receipt of the payment PUP this week is Accommodation and Food Service activities, followed by Wholesale and Retail Trade.

Business group ISME says the Pandemic Unemployment Payment is making it difficult for employers to find workers.

They are calling for the rapid reduction of the PUP , which they say is needed for the labour market to return to normal.

283 new cases of Covid-19 nationwide

Galway Bay fm newsroom – 283 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed by the Department of Health.

60 people are in hospital with the virus, down 7 in 24 hours.

23 are in ICU, which is unchanged over the same period.

There are no local figures to ongoing issues relating to the cyber-attack on the HSE.

€1.3m funding to support live performances across Galway this summer

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Almost €1.3m funding has been announced to support gigs and festivals in Galway this summer.

It’s as the Government has unveiled a national allocation of €25m under The Live Performance Support Scheme.

The largest allocation of almost €200 thousand will go to the Galway Comedy Festival, to support the staging of live shows.

A further €185 has been awarded to Strange Brew Limited, towards a series a concerts to be held in Galway, Dublin, Limerick and Cork, as well as three large outdoor events.

€182 thousand will go to popular west end venue the Róisín Dubh, for a series of live shows peformed at the venue and outdoor beer garden.

Clonbur-based Gemstone Business Consultants has been granted an allocation of €169 thousand for a number of live music performances over a weekend.

€132 thousand will support traditional live music events at the Black Gate at St. Francis Street – while a further €130 thousand has been awarded for live performances at Munroes Live.

City-based production company Milestone Inventive has been allocated €127 thousand for a number of outdoor performances of ‘Playboy of the Western World’.

€95 thousand has been granted to the well known Trad on the Prom show, while €64 thousand will support a Mike Denver plus guests sit down concert.

And just under €32 thousand will go to the CelloVision project, which blends live and pre-recorded music with unconventional video and imagery on stage.
