Lights were out of order for up to the three months in parts of Galway – even after the fault was reported to the company contracted to upkeep them.
That was the claim this week, as several local councillors lambasted Electric Skyline for their tardiness in fixing the lights, which was leaving some estates in total darkness.
Cllr Shane Curley (FF) said he had been ringing the company which won the contract from Galway County Council once or twice a week but had failed to get a result for one estate in Loughrea.
“They’ve six lights and none are working – they’re three months without any lights. We are paying them serious money. You’d be better off getting through to the Kremlin,” he fumed.
Cllr Jimmy McClearn (FG) concurred saying some lights in Portumna had been out of action for months. He had spoken to a contractor recently replacing lights in Portumna, who revealed they were under serious pressure.
“It’s getting out of hand at this stage. Even new lights they put up, some of them worked, some them didn’t. The service is not satisfactory.”
Cllr Gerry Finnerty said it was “absolute joke” how long some parts of Gort had to wait to get lights replaced.
He said Bridge Street had no lights that week, which was where the Credit Union and the Bank of Ireland were trading and near two sides of a river. Mourners had gathered in the dark outside one of the biggest funerals in Kilbaconty recently as one of the main lights outside the church was gone.
Cllr Michael ‘Moegie’ Maher said constituents were complaining that after all the money that had been spent on The Walks, people could not use it at night-time as the lights were not on.
“I’m sick of emailing them. We’re not getting any response,” he exclaimed.
