Galway United 1
Bray Wanderers 2
GOOD lord, where do you start with this? The obvious place is to probably start at the end – the end of Galway United’s title challenge, after a lifeless display saw them drop points for the fourth time in five games to all but hand Cork City the First Division title.
It is still mathematically possible for United to win the league: they are seven points behind City, with still have 18 points to play for, including a home game with City next month. However, that game, long thought of as a potential title showdown, is now in very real danger of being a title coronation for the Leesiders, who could secure the title with a win that night.
United have picked up just five points from a possible 15 since the middle of July, and while there may have been cause to bemoan a lack of luck in previous games, United can have no excuse for Friday’s lame effort, in which they were handed two fairly soft penalties.
Even that generosity from the officials wasn’t enough to rescue United, however, as David Hurley’s miss from 12 yards in the fourth minute set the tone for what was to come from the home side.
