Killannin 3-7
Monivea/Abbey 1-12
Eanna O’Reilly at Pearse Stadium
KILLANNIN got their first win of the championship against Monivea/Abbey in Pearse Stadium on Sunday, in a positive recovery from their opening day defeat to Milltown. Marvin Lee’s side did enough to shade this encounter, while their opponents Monivea/Abbey will have regrets about their lack of accuracy in front of goal, particularly in the first half.
Ultimately, Killannin’s goal threat proved to be the difference as they showed an ability to open up the Monivea/Abbey defence on a number of occasions. The class of county star Johnny Heaney was also a big factor, as he was involved in most of Killannin’s best pieces of play during the game.
On a very humid afternoon in Pearse Stadium, Killannin opened the scoring when a good team move ended with a point from Aaron McGuire. Within a minute, Monivea/Abbey had a goal chance at the other end, when Connor Dolan fired a shot narrowly wide. Heaney got Killannin’s second point, after playing a neat one-two with midfielder David Kelly.
Cian Folan was a major threat in attack for Killannin, and when Heaney sent a long ball into the square in his direction, Folan was taken down by Monivea/Abbey ‘keeper Denis Farragher. Heaney sent his penalty to the bottom corner to maintain Killannin’s perfect start.
