Baroque music will be in the air in Galway City next Wednesday, November 23, when Maya Homburger on baroque violin and Malcolm Proud on harpsichord will give a concert at St Joseph’s Church, Presentation Road.
This event, starting at 8pm, is part of Music for Galway’s Bach season. The concert will be framed by two sonatas, written by the German composer and performed by Swiss-born Maya and Dubliner Malcolm, both of whom are renowned in the world of baroque music.
They will open with Sonata no. 1 in B minor, one of a group of six compositions with which Bach smashed the convention of the traditional baroque trio sonata. This paved the way for the piano-violin sonatas of Mozart and Beethoven.
Music for Galway’s Artistic Director, Finghin Collins describes next Wednesday’s programme as “special”, adding that, “apart from hearing the wonderful Maya perform, I look forward to the two Bach preludes and fugues for solo harpsichord. These are beautiful works and I know that in the hands of Malcolm Proud they will surprise even those who meet this instrument with suspicion”.
