Tommy Larkins 4-17
Kilconieron 0-17
Eanna O’Reilly in Loughrea
Over a century has passed since Woodford won their two county senior titles, in 1913 and 1917. On both of those occasions, they triumphed over a Kilconieron team which appeared in seven county finals during that decade, winning two, but on Sunday afternoon in Loughrea, Kilconieron once again found the Woodford men too tough a nut to crack.
Tommy Larkins emphatically recorded their second win of this year’s championship, running out 12-point winners on a day when Ronan Murphy scored a hat-trick of goals. Although Kilconieron competed well in the first-half, they lacked the quality to stay in the contest for the duration. Declan Loughnane’s charges have found the senior A championship to be an unforgiving competition this year, and still await their first win.
Their opponents had a greater variety of scoring options, while they dominated in the middle third and conceded a relatively modest total of 0-9 from play. Noel Murphy’s side had the look of a team well used to competing at senior A level, looking slicker in possession, playing with more pace and energy, and taking their goal chances decisively. They also used the elements far more effectively and their long-range shooting accuracy in the first-half made Kilconieron’s use of a sweeper largely irrelevant.
