Worlds Collide, a concert fusing the best of jazz and classical music, which is directed by Headford composer and performer Matthew Berrill, will take place next Wednesday August 31, at 8pm in Druid’s Mick Lally Theatre. It will feature four top-class Galway jazz performers who will share a stage with the classically trained ConTempo Quartet, Galway’s ensemble in residence.
World Collides is the culmination of two-year project, The JazzTempo residency, led by Matthew in conjunction with the Galway Music Residency, which began in 2020, during Covid.
The project involved two residencies in Oughterard Courthouse in which the members of ConTempo – Bogdan Sofei and Ingrid Nicola on violin, Andreea Banciu on viola and Adrian Mantu on cello – joined forces with Matthew on clarinet/sax, Aengus Hackett on guitar, Róisín Mulliez on vocals, and Barry Donohue on double bass.
These musicians from different genres challenged one another and learned from each other’s experiences in a unique creative environment.
It was all driven by Headford man Matthew, a member of many ensembles in the jazz, improvised and traditional Irish music, including Ensemble Ériu and the Irish Memory Orchestra.
