As they say out the country, you wouldn’t know who you’d meet at Mass!
War-time Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discovered this was true when he posed for a selfie in a pew with Galway West TD and Super Junior Minister Noel Grealish (Ind) at St Peter’s Basilica for Pope Leo XVI’s inauguration Mass last weekend.
Swedish soccer star Zlatan Ibrahimovic also got to meet his Irish political hero on Monday when the Carnmore man posed for a photograph with the striker, who plays in Milan.
Galway businessman Declan Ganley, meanwhile, tweeted that he was enjoying a cigar outside his favourite restaurant in Rome when President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina hopped out of a VIP limo with a police escort.
“A jocular exchange ensued, and he clocks my cigar and wise cracks ‘I hope it’s Cuban’. (It is),” Ganley said, adding it was great Ireland was represented at the highest level for the new Pope’s unveiling.
