Initiative underway to plug skill gaps in Galway jobs market

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A research project is underway in Galway to help those on a career break to return to employment and fill skills gaps in the market.
The initiative is being led by Galway Executive Skillnet – a network which provides upskilling to local small, medium and large companies.
The research project aims to find solutions to current and future vacancies in the Med-Tech, Finance and Manufacturing Engineers sectors in the West.
A focus group is to be organised in the city in the coming weeks for those currently on career breaks who are looking to return to the workforce.

14 Covid patients being treated at UHG today

Galway Bay fm newsroom – 14 patients are being treated for Covid 19 at UHG today.

The hospital now has the seventh highest number of coronavirus patients nationwide.

There are four Covid patients being treated in the intensive care unit at the acute city hospital.

In the east of the county, there is just one patient being treated for the virus at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.

Contractor to be appointed shortly for new footbridge at Clarin College Athenry

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A contractor is expected to be appointed shortly for a long-sought new pedestrian footbridge at Clarin College Athenry.

The matter arose at Athenry-Oranmore District level, where it was confirmed by senior engineers that “everything is ready to go”.

Tenders were issued in July and have now been assessed, with the local authority awaiting the official appointment of the successful contractor.

It’s expected once underway, the works will take around eight weeks to complete – though no provisional start date has yet been offered.

The footbridge was included in the original plans for the new school, but the works were excluded from the original contracts which led to long-running delays.

1,224 new cases of Covid-19 reported nationally

Galway Bay FM Newsroom – There has been a further 1,224 Covid-19 cases reported today.

It brings the five-day moving average of new cases to 1,334 – a slight increase compared to yesterday, but down from 1,454 a week ago.

278 people are in hospital with the virus, up 17 in 24 hours.

63 are in ICU, down three.

Figures released for Galway University Hospital yesterday evening shows that there are 16 receiving treatment for Covid-19. A reduction of 7 on the day previously.

Meanwhile, in Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, there is one patient getting treatment. No change from yesterday.

Of those figures, there are 4 in ICU in GUH, a reduction of 2 on yesterday and no change for Portiuncula with 1 patient in ICU.
