The IDA said investment in residential developments in Galway, as well as some key transport projects, was vital to maintaining a competitive edge for the city and county in 2025.
The agency tasked with attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to the West, said investment was required in key areas for the future sustainable growth of Galway City, particularly residential development and transport infrastructure.
It said it hoped the Galway sites earmarked for housing by the Land Development Agency would enter the planning system in 2025. And it hoped a decision on the Galway City Ring Road project would be made this coming year.
In its end of year review, the IDA also referenced the redevelopment of Ceannt Station in Galway City which was well underway in 2024. This project aimed to facilitate sustainable growth, reduce emissions, and improve the overall travel experience for residents and visitors.
“The importance of continued investment in critical infrastructure to maintain Galway’s competitiveness for Foreign Direct Investment is crucial. The residential supply in Galway has been a critical focus, especially given the region’s growth and attractiveness for FDI. Competition for FDI remains intense. Every job created in Ireland by a multinational company has been hard won against competition from a growing number of sophisticated locations and economies,” said Ricky Conneely, IDA Ireland’s Regional Business Development Manager for the West Region.
Mr Conneely said a strong commercial property market was another factor in attracting FDI. He pointed to the IDA’s recently completed new advanced manufacturing facility in Parkmore East of 48,000 square feet which it was currently marketing to potential investors.
The IDA also noted significant progress in the private property sector, with the Crown Square in Mervue and Bonham Quay at the Docks, both advancing to the next phase in Galway City.
