It’s hoped a decision on the expansion of Galway Harbour will be made by An Bord Pleanála by the end of the year.
CEO Conor O’Dowd has briefed city councillors on the long-awaited development plans, which would allow for a transformative residential and commercial urban quarter.
He also highlighted challenges, including how inadequate port facilities eliminated the export of granite from Connemara to The Gambia and the shipment of wind turbine tower sections
Despite the challenges, he said the Port has identified new opportunities over the next couple of years, particularly in the export of timber and stone.
