Between Covid and just a little reluctance on my own part to venture into machines that keep you ‘afloat’ in the skies, I couldn’t remember the last time that I had been on a plane . . . that is until last week when a family adventure took us to the Portuguese city of Porto facing out onto the Atlantic.
Being a child of the ‘60s, holidays, as we think of them today, didn’t really feature on our family agenda or indeed any other people that I knew along the road. Holidays were simply time off school, although there was always a little nagging curiosity attached to the sponsored mornming programme on Radio Éireann, promoting the merits of taking a break in the sun.
The jingle or signature tune from that programme was the chorus of the Cliff Richard hit song of 1963 which still reverberates around my head whenever I see the sun shining brightly on a Summer’s day.
“We’re all goin’ on a summer holiday
No more workin’ for a week or two
Fun and laughter on a Summer holiday
No more worries for me or you…”
Summer was more about the bog and the hay than any jaunts to foreign climes but here and there day trips to places like Athenry for Lady Day on August 15 or Tuam for ‘The Races’ (the poor man’s version of the Galway Festival) could be slotted into the schedule.
