Michael Scott’s production of John B Keane’s hit comedy play, The Matchmaker, comes to Tuam’s Mall Theatre on Saturday, February 24, starring two of Ireland’s favourite actors, Mary McEvoy and Jon Kenny. They play a myriad of characters in this earthy and dramatic comedy.
The Matchmaker follows the efforts of Dicky Mick Dicky O’Connor to make matches for the lonely and lovelorn of rural Ireland.
Keane, an avid observer of people and the cultures that bind and create their worldview, explored rural loneliness in this work. He knew that generations of people only became masters of their own destinies late in life – they could finally begin to look for companionship and love once their duties as minder of ageing parents were concluded or they had finally inherited land; often they were the ‘left-over’ brother or sister. Using his inimitable way with words, and his renowned sense of ‘devilment’ and wit, Keane delves into the longings, hungers, fears and foibles of this collection of lonely country people, creating a marvellously colourful world.
This is a play that takes the audience back to another time, when phones were few and far between. Mary McEvoy and Jon Kenny, household names throughout Ireland, bring their considerable talent and experience to the many characters they portray, making them real and frequently hilarious.
■ Tickets for this production in The Mall Theatre on Saturday, February 24, at 8pm from Quinn’s Newsagents, Bishop Street, Tuam, phone 093-26060.
