A man whose girlfriend died, when he crashed his jeep while checking his phone for messages, has been given a suspended five-year sentence and disqualified from driving for ten years.
20 year old Alan Collins, from Clooncagh, Glinsk appeared for sentence before Galway Circuit Criminal Court.
Alan Collins had pleaded guilty in February to dangerous driving which caused the death of 19 year old Elaine Curley at Millford, Creggs on November 6, 2011.
The court heard the couple were neighbours and had been going out together for five years.
Neither of them were wearing seat belts when Collins lost control of his jeep as he tried to negotiate a bend a couple of hundred yards from a pub where the couple had been drinking since 6.30pm that evening.
He later admitted he had drank three pints in the pub and had been checking his mobile phone for missed calls or messages as he drove.
LISTEN: Mám Éan pilgrimage to return this weekend
Galway Bay FM Newsroom – The Mám Éan pilgrammage is set to take place in Connemara this weekend.
The popular pilgramage to Mám Éan pass, nestled in the Maumturk mountains, has previously been cancelled due to Covid-19.
However, it’s set to resume this Sunday with some restrictions in place.
Gatherers will remain at the chapel and will not move from station to station as is usually tradition.
Former Councillor Sean O’ Tuairisg says it’s great to have the event back this weekend.
Protest to take place in Mervue this afternoon over planned housing development
Galway Bay FM Newsroom – A protest will take place in Mervue this afternoon over a planned “build to rent” housing development in the area.
The Crown Square Development will consist of 345 units comprised of one-bed, two-bed and three-bed units.
However, People Before Profit Galway says it’s unacceptable that the homes will go straight to an investment fund when completed.
They argue that vulture and cuckoo funds should be banned in Ireland – but instead they are being accomodated by Government policy.
The local party branch has organised a protest to take place at the Crown Square site this afternoon at 2pm.
