GARDAÍ have appealed for witnesses to make contact with them in relation to a serious road incident on Christmas Day where a motorist entered the M6 motorway near Ballinasloe driving in the wrong direction.
The incident, which led to a closure of a section of the motorway for a number of hours on the afternoon of December 25, resulted in a collision between two vehicles with one person suffering what Gardaí said were ‘non-serious injuries’.
Gardaí and other emergency services were quickly on the scene of the incident which occurred between Junction 15 – Ballinasloe West – and Junction 14 – Ballinasloe East.
A Garda spokesperson told the Connacht Tribune that a full investigation into the incident was being conducted and appealed for any witnesses to contact Ballinasloe Garda Station on 09096-31890.
Eight people lost their lives on roads in the Republic of Ireland between Friday, December 20, and Sunday, December 29, while a further 20 suffered serious and life-changing injuries – so far this year a total of 178 people have been killed on Irish roads.
