Gardai investigate incident at Supervalu in Loughrea

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Gardai are investigating an incident at McInerney’s Supervalu in Loughrea today.

Members of Gardai maintained a presence at the foodstore on the Athenry Road in the town earlier today but have declined to comment on the nature of the incident.

Galway Bay fm news understands it concerns negotiations between Supervalu and a third party.

A spokesperson for the store says it’s a sensitive matter which management is working to resolve.

Galway slightly above national average for home vacancy rate

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway has a home vacancy rate just above the national average of 4 percent.

Across the county, 6 percent of homes are vacant, according to Gerdirectory’s Residential Buildings Report.

At the end of 2022, Leitrim had the highest number of vacancies, at 12 percent, followed closely by Mayo on 11 percent.

While Dublin has the lowest, with just one percent of homes there vacant.

Nationally, over 83,500 residential properties were vacant last month, with the report finding the West was worst affected.

CEO of Galway Chamber takes aim at social media “celebrations” over quashing of Ring Road

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The CEO of Galway Chamber says he was angered to see some of the “celebrations” on social media over the technical quashing of the Galway Ring Road.

It follows final orders issued in the High Court this week in judicial review actions taken against the granting of permission.

The green light from An Bord Pleanala was quashed, because it failed to take into account the Government’s newest Climate Action Plan.

A planning application for the €600m project will now have to be reconsidered by the planning body – though it will not be going fully back to the drawing board.

It’s not known how long the process might take or when we might expect a final answer.

Speaking to Galway Talks, CEO of Galway Chamber Kenny Deery said there’s little reason for celebration.

Galway Mountain Rescue aid hypothermic walkeron Maumtrasna

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway Mountain Rescue have taken part in an operation to rescue a lost walker suffering from hypothermia – on Maumtrasna Mountain in Co. Mayo.

The solo walker became exhausted and lost in poor weather conditions late yesterday afternoon.

Galway Mountain Rescue worked with Mayo Mountain Resuce and Rescue 118 helicopter – to locate the casulty in fading light.

They were suffering from hypothermia and were unable to walk off the mountain – and were successfully airlifted to Mayo General Hospital.
