Gráinne Seoige has bowed out of the race for a seat in Galway West on the ninth count.
The Fianna Fáil candidate was overtaken by Social Democrats City Councillor Eibhlín Seoighthe when Independent Mike Cubbard’s votes were redistributed.
The well-known broadcaster from An Spidéal was at the count centre in Salthill earlier on Sunday, where she had conceded defeat.
She said she was tired after four months of campaigning and would reflect on the next chapter over the coming days.
“You never know what’s going to happen in the future,” she said.
There was speculation at the count centre that she may seek a seat in the Seanad when the dust settles on this General Election.
It’s thought unlikely that she would seek to be co-opted into the Galway City Council seat to be vacated by John Connolly, who is now certain to hold the ‘Éamon Ó Cuív Fianna Fáil seat’
Her transfers will push John Connolly closer to the quota.
Mairéad Farrell (SF) and Catherine Connolly (Ind) are in line to be re-elected, as is Hildegarde Naughton (FG) and Noel Grealish (Ind) but Noel Thomas (Ind Ire) cannot be discounted at this stage and has an outside chance of causing an upset by taking the fifth seat.
