ALL good things must come to an end and so it was on Monday evening as Galway United surrendered their 100% start to the season on a pitch off the side of the Strokestown Road a couple of miles outside Longford.
Taking the emotion out of it, it was actually a pretty decent game. The rampant league leaders rock up looking to equal the league’s record for 12 consecutive winning starts to the season, faced by a home side who are one place off the foot of the table, struggling for form with just one win all season, and that against a basement side that is completely out of its depth in its rookie season in the league.
It seemed that only one outcome was likely: United were unbackable 2/9 favourites to claim the win which, by way of explanation, turned out to mean that for every €9 you put on United to win, you lost €9.
The only goal of the game came in the third minute and even at that stage was completely against the run of play, with United having had three attacks in the first 120 seconds, one of which should have seen David Hurley open the scoring only for Town goalkeeper Jack Brady to block the midfielder’s effort with his legs.
Those early forays suggested a night of dominance by the visitors, and we were settling in for a return to form for United after a poor display against Cobh Ramblers the previous Friday night when the plucky little Midlanders finally managed to get out of their own half and then . . . disaster . . . they . . . they scored.
