Galway United 3
Longford Town 0
(Utd win 5-2 on aggregate)
GALWAY United picked the perfect time to produce their best performance in almost three months last Sunday as they brushed aside the challenge of Longford Town at Eamonn Deacy Park to set-up a First Division play-off final against Waterford FC this Friday.
Two of the three goals on Sunday may have come right at the end of the game, but rather than embellishing the scoreline, they gave it a more realistic look as the home side were head and shoulders above what it turns out is a limited Longford side after all.
John Caulfield’s side went into Sunday’s game with just one win from five previous meetings with the Midlands outfit this season, but once Ed McCarthy and, in particular, Conor O’Keeffe managed to nullify the threat of Darren Clarke; and Killian Brouder and James Finnerty put some manners on Jordan Adeyemo, the limitations of Gary Cronin’s side were exposed.
Credit must be given to the United manager, who got his selection bang on the money, especially the faith he has shown in Adam Thomas. The loanee from Shelbourne come up against both Mo Salah and Neymar when playing for New Zealand at the 2012 Olympic Games, but the League of Ireland is different gravy and he has not looked to be the greatest of fits at United since joining in the summer transfer window.
