Galway to see investment of €153 million as part of the national broadband plan

County Galway will see an investment of €153 million in the new high speed fibre network according to the latest report from National Broadband Ireland.

In Galway, there are over 38,300 premises in the intervention area which includes homes, farms, commercial businesses and schools.

This equates to 28% of all premises in the county.

[The first homes in Galway will be connected early next year, while over 115,000 premises nationwide will be passed and available for connection within the next 18 months.

In year three of the rollout, NBI says it will continue to ramp up its design and build activities, and 40% of all premises in the intervention area will have access to broadband.

NBI contractors have been on the ground in Galway since January.

Surveys have been completed in Oranmore, Clarinbrige, Claregalway, Furbo and Barna.

More recently, work was completed in the east of the county including the areas around Ballinasloe such as Kiltomer, Oatfield, Annagh, Kilconnell, and Ahascragh.

Investigation underway following plane crash near Athenry

Galway Bay fm newsroom – An investigation is being carried out following a plane crash near Athenry yesterday.

A man and a woman – both aged in their 60s – were taken to University Hospital Galway following the light aircraft crash in a field near Killimordaly GAA club around 1.30pm.

It’s understood the pilot was attempting to make an emergency landing in the Cessna 172 following engine trouble when the crash happened.

One person was airlifted via Air Corps helicopter 112 to UHG while another was taken via ambulance.

Personel from the Air Accident Investigation Unit attended the scene and will carry out an investigation into the incident.

Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Albert Dolan says investigators need time to establish what exactly happened…

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Two people have been taken to University Hospital Galway following a light aircraft crash near Athenry.

It’s understood a small plane made an emergency landing at a GAA pitch near Killimordaly shortly after lunchtime.

One person was airlifted via Air Corps helicopter 112 to UHG while another was taken via ambulance.

Emergency services – including units of Galway Fire Brigade – remain at the scene this afternoon.

Man dies following house fire in Moylough

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A man has died following a house fire in Moylough.

It’s understood the fire broke out at around 5am at a two storey house in the Moate area.

It’s believed the man, who is aged in his 60’s, was living alone at the house.

Emergency services – including several units from Mountbellew and Tuam – remain at the scene this morning.
