Several million in funding for East Galway under ‘Just Transition’ fund

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Several million euro has been awarded to projects in East Galway under the Government’s Just Transition Fund, which has been approved today.

The awards are part of a national pot worth €28m, designed to assist communities transitioning out of peat harvesting.

Projects that will directly benefit East Galway include the Ballyforan Greenway Loop, which has received almost €1m.

While half a million euro has been allocated to the Pulse Hub in Ballinasloe.

East Galway will also benefit from a large number of well-funded initiatives that are not county specific, but will benefit the area.

These include the Shannonbridge Action Group, which is to receive €400 thousand for the implementation of a strategic area response plan.

Galway East Fianna Fail Junior Minister Anne Rabbitte says all of the projects will create green and sustainable employment opportunities.

6 further deaths nationally from COVID-19, 226 new cases, 6 in Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has today been notified of 6 additional deaths related to COVID-19.

There has been a total of 2,028 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland.

As of midnight Monday 23rd November, the HPSC has been notified of 226 confirmed cases of COVID-19. There is now a total of 70,930 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland. 

Of the cases notified today;

  • 115 are men / 109 are women
  • 56% are under 45 years of age
  • The median age is 42 years old
  • 64 in Dublin, 41 in Donegal, 23 in Tipperary, 13 in Limerick, 12 in Louth, 12 in Wicklow, and the remaining 61 in 16 other counties.

As of 2pm today 292 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 36 are in ICU. 18 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

Galway’s “Cloud” crowned Ireland’s Puppy of the Year 2020

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway lurcher has seen off competition from hundreds of dogs nationwide to be crowned Ireland’s Puppy of the Year 2020.

“Cloud”, a greengrass lurcher, is 4 months old and has the appearance of a miniature Irish Wolfhound.

She’ll now become the face of national pet-retailer Petmania for the upcoming year, and has claimed prizes worth over €1,500.

Judges commended her beautiful merle coat and amazing unique eyes, as well as her “rascal” personality.

Cloud’s owner, Aine Ni Fhaoláin, says Cloud’s special talents include playing fetch, belly rubs, and eating everything she can get her paws on.
