Galway step up the pace in securing league semis spot

Galway 3-13
Limerick 0-7
Eanna O’Reilly in Kilmallock
THE Galway senior camogie team qualified for a place in the National League semi-finals with a comfortable victory over Limerick on Saturday. Cathal Murray’s side produced an excellent second half performance to completely outclass their hosts in Kilmallock. It was a powerful display from Galway and a much more convincing effort compared to their opening day win over Clare.
Conditions in Kilmallock were perfect for camogie with the sun shining down on a solid pitch surface. Limerick opened the scoring in the first minute, with star forward Caoimhe Costelloe pointing a free from the half-way line. Galway opened their account three minutes later when Carrie Dolan pointed her first placed ball.
A minute later, Ailish O’Reilly broke inside the Limerick full back line, before blasting a shot off the crossbar. Catherine Finnerty was alert to the rebound and took a point to give Galway a lead they would never relinquish.
O’Reilly’s goal chance was an early indication of the threat posed by the Galway full forward line. Costelloe pointed her second free, before Galway raised their first green flag a minute later. A quick free from Dolan found Siobhán McGrath in the corner and a brilliant run and pass from McGrath set up O’Reilly, who finished expertly to the net.
Limerick were competitive at this stage, with Karen O’Leary prominent in midfield and Costelloe deadly accurate from frees. The Adare forward punished Galway twice before the water break to leave the margin at a single point. The Tribeswomen’s goal threat was ever present however, and they struck again after the water break.
