Galway rebel Fine Gael members to take part in private think in

Galway bay fm newsroom – Galway Senator Fidelma Healy Eames says the rebel Fine Gael think in will focus on issues such as mortgage arrears, SMEs, and social welfare reform.

The group of eight which is outside the Fine Gael parliamentary party whip is meeting in Leinster House tomorrow to finalise the agenda.

Senator Healy Eames insists the private ‘think in’ which takes place next Saturday at a hotel in Dublin, is not a step to create a new parliamentary party. (14 Sep)

However speaking rights for Daíl members will be discussed and a motion is expected to be out forward by the group this Autumn.

Disruption to water supply in Gort as upgrade works get underway

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Households and businesses in Gort will likely experience disruption to their water supply over the coming days.

It comes as Irish Water is proceeding with long awaited works to upgrade the water treatment plant to address issues with the supply, where a boil water notice is still in place.

Crews from Irish Water and Galway County Council are on site carrying out upgrade works to rectify the issues at the treatment plant, with a view to lifting the boil water notice as quickly and as safely as possible.

While works are underway, customers in Gort and surrounding areas may experience temporary, intermittent low pressure or water outages from 5am to 12 noon each day from today (Tuesday 24 May) until Thursday.

To reduce the impact on customers, Irish Water says crews will reconfigure the network in order to maintain the water supply to as many areas as possible.

Local councillor Geraldine Donohue has welcomed the upgrade work this week but says the community has been frustrated.

Significant disruption at Galway’s public hospitals as medical scientists resume strike action

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Saolta Hospital Group has warned of significant disruption and service delays in Galway’s public hospitals today and tomorrow as medical laboratory scientists resume industrial action.

Up to 30,000 hospital procedures will be cancelled nationwide due to the strike.

2,100 medical scientists are picketing over pay and career development issues.

They’re refusing to carry out routine lab services from 8am to 8pm today and tomorrow.

Tony Canavan, Chief Executive of the Saolta Hospital Group, says the strike will lead to the cancellation of many inpatient and day-case elective procedures, as well as hospital outpatient appointments.

National Award for Galway students at Enterprise finals

From Galway Bay FM newsroom- Galway students have taken second place in the senior category at this year’s Student Enterprise Programme National Finals.

Students James Donoghue and Paul Mannion from Holy Rosary College in Mountbellew came second with their enterprise ‘Know Your Phone’.

‘Know Your Phone’ is as book designed to help individuals use their smartphone effectively, and has had sales of over €9,000 to date.

In the senior ‘Creative Business Idea’ category, Merlin College student, Luis Rauner, came first with his enterprise ‘Heat the feet’.

This category saw students pitch their most innovative business ideas via video, without having to produce a product or service.
