Pop-rock multi-instrumentalist D. Cullen has spent a long time preparing for the release of his latest album. A project that was in motion well before Covid, his LP has gone through the process of being pieced together, postponed, rewritten, edited – and finally released at the end of September.
All in all, it has taken four years for Sing My Story, Tell My Song to come to fruition, but now that the record is out in the world, Darragh can avert his attention to performing the songs that have been hidden in audio files for far too long.
On November 5, D. Cullen plays Galway’s Monroe’s Tavern to kick off an Ireland & UK tour. It will be his first gig back with his band post-Covid, and it will give him the chance to bring his new material to a live arena. Given the length of time it has taken to get here, the overriding emotion accompanying Darragh’s recent success is one of relief.
“Relief is the right word, I think,” he admits. “I remember chatting to you when we actually had a version of the album done and it was all set to go in 2020. Then when Covid happened and all the gigs got cancelled and the lockdowns came in, I just ended up writing a lot more songs and working with other people and getting nearly a whole other album down.
“The album that is out now is kind of a mix of the pre-Covid and post-Covid version. It’s great to have it out at last and to have people being able to hear it. The songs don’t just live on my laptop now – they’re out in the real world.”
