We may not want to talk about it, but bladder leaks are extremely common, affecting one in three women in the 24 to 85 age group.
Half of mothers have prolapse; when one or more of the organs in the pelvis slip down from their normal position and bulge into the vagina – even mums that had C-Sections. Peri and Post Menopause is also a life stage that has a significant effect on pelvic floor muscles.
Chartered Physiotherapist Aoife Ní Eochaidh is leading a charge to get people to take charge of their pelvic health, and her efforts have garnered national attention.
Her practice, International Pelvic Physiotherapy Management, has won Physiotherapy Service of the Year at the inaugural All-Island Private Healthcare Excellence Awards.
Founder of Home Pelvic Routines – an online home guide now used in ten countries for men and women to train pelvic floor muscles – she is on a mission to encourage people to access the services they need despite any taboo associated with them.
The clinic provides physiotherapy assessment and treatment for men and women with Incontinence of the bladder and bowel, pelvic organ prolapse, obstructed defecation, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, osteoporosis and pelvic lymphoedema
“We use modern non-invasive technologies – manual therapy, exercise therapy and electrotherapy- to ensure optimal results. We are passionate about the pelvic floor and provide our services and care with kindness. Pelvic floor problems can be awful, but the treatment results are great,” she enthuses, repeating the clinic’s motto.
The Clare native, who married a Galway man and is a mum of three, was inspired to work in pelvic floor physiotherapy seeing first-hand the terrible impact pelvic dysfunction had on her late grandmother, Eileen O’Sullivan.
