Galway Musical Society will present its new show next week. Thirty-eight years after it was first established and four years since the group last took the Galway stage, GMS will return to the Town Hall Theatre from next Tuesday to Saturday, April 11-15, with its latest musical, Rent.
Rehearsals were taking place for Jonathan Larson’s show in 2020 when Covid struck and everything had to stop, just a month before the production was due to be staged.
After several potential restarts over three years, all involved are now ready to take centre stage.
Based on Puccini’s 1896 opera La Bohème, Rent follows a group of struggling young artists living in Manhattan’s East Village at the height of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Larson died on eve of the show’s 1996 premiere and did not see his work go onto becoming one of the most successful musicals in Broadway history before closing in 2008. It has been a key influence on musical theatre ever since.
Led by director Paul Norton, choreographer Jay Molyneux and musical director John Roe, Galway Musical Society began rehearsing Rent in January and the group has been focusing on it since then.
This production will feature Brandon Collier (Mark), Keith Hanley (Roger), Hannah Wright (Mimi), Niall Conway (Collins), Jay Molyneux (Angel), Helena Brosnan (Maureen), Gabrielle Reid (Joanne) and Jay Hall (Benny) in lead roles and they will be backed by a terrific ensemble of GMS veterans and newcomers.
