Galway Marks and Spencer closed as workers stike

Galway bay fm newsroom – Marks and Spencer at the Corrib shopping centre in the city centre is closed today as workers have gone on strike.

The shutters are closed on the store and around 10 of the staff are wearing placards saying ‘Mandate, Marks and Spencer official strike’

Around 10 more of the staff are maintaining a presence outside at the side of the shopping centre.

The group join around 2,000 workers at 17 M&S stores in the strike action – in a row over the company’s defined pension scheme.

Management say they want to re-open “meaningful negotiations”

The company is advising people they can still shop online, and the store at the Corrib shopping centre will be re-open tomorrow.

Report reveals Kinvara most expensive area for property in Connacht

Galway Bay fm newsroom – It’s been revealed that Kinvara has the most expensive property market in Connacht and Ulster.

The latest Daft.ie Wealth Report shows the average asking price for property in the South Galway village is €317 thousand.

It’s followed by Galway City, with an average figure of €297 thousand.

Meanwhile, Oughterard is the second most expensive town in Connacht/Ulster – with the average property commanding a price of €244 thousand.

Galway islanders urged to apply for thatch roof grants

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway islanders are being urged to apply for grants which support the renovation of thatched roofs.

Minister of State and Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon is encouraging islanders in particular to avail of the grant, which only applies to owner occupied houses.

A grant of two thirds of the approved cost, up to a maximum of €3,800, is available for mainland applications.

While a higher level of assistance of up to €5,700 is available for houses on specified offshore islands.

Householders with a medical card may be eligible for higher grants in both cases – with up to 80 percent of the overall cost available.

Minister Cannon says thatch roofs are an integral part of the tapestry of the Irish countryside.

Funding announced for flood works in Moylough and Woodlawn

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway County Council has allocated nearly 50 thousand euro for flood works in Moylough and Woodlawn.

The works come after residents in both areas have experienced flooding due to run-off water during heavy rain.

The works will include replacing an underground pipe at Carrowmore Woodland at a cost of 36 thousand euro, and drainage works at the back of the national school in Moylough at a cost of over 13 thousand

The funding has been announced by Roscommon Galway TD Denis Naughton following collaboration with Ballinasloe area Councillor Tim Broderick.

Deputy Naughton says the works will provide comfort to residents in the affected areas.
