A 43-year-old man has confirmed guilty pleas to charges arising from an attack on a shop security guard in Westside.
At Galway Circuit Court, Kenneth Goldbey, with an address at 28 Gaelcarrig Park, Newcastle, confirmed pleas to three offences at Aldi, Westside on July 14, 2025.
He pleaded guilty to having an 11-inch knife intended to cause injury to, incapacitate or intimidate, contrary to Section 9 (5) of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.
He also admitted charges of assault causing harm to a man and making a threat to kill or cause serious harm to the victim.
Defence barrister Garry McDonald BL said he was seeking an early sentencing date.
Counsel said his client had been in custody since July and jurisdiction of the case was refused in the District Court.
Counsel said his client had engaged with the probation and welfare services and an up-to-date report would be of benefit.
Judge Brian O’Callaghan remanded the accused in custody to July 22, 2026.
Kenneth Goldbey was previously refused bail at his first court appearance at Derrynea District Court in July.
At the time, Garda Shane McGill of Galway Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge, and caution of the accused on Monday, July 14.
He made no reply to two charges, but in reply to another, the accused said: “Yiz are all c*nts; I’ll take you all out one by one,” Garda McGill said.
Sergeant Damien Prendergast confirmed that the State objected to bail.
Garda McGill gave a brief outline of the allegation that the accused was denied access to Aldi in Westside at 6.25pm on July 14 by security staff.
It was alleged that the accused was in possession of an 11-inch black handled knife and lunged at a security guard with it. The worker suffered a cut to his hand and required medical attention including a tetanus shot, the court heard.
