Galway knackeries among 40 nationwide to close as they seek better financial package

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Two East Galway Knackeries, Madden’s Woodlawn and Greene’s Ahascragh, are among the 40 nationwide that have been forced to close according to the Animal Collectors’ Association.

Those working in the animal collection service are calling on the government to increase funding to their industry.

The ACA says talks broke down with the Department of Agriculture earlier this week on the issue.

Chairperson Michael McKeever, says they are prepared to remain closed as they are currently making a loss.

Blockade continues outside Liffey meats in Ballinasloe as Creed calls on farmers to stand down

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A blockade is continuing outside Liffey Meats near Ballinasloe this afternoon.

It comes as the Agriculture Minister has appealed to beef farmers to stand down at blockades nationwide.

While at the Ploughing Championships in Carlow today, Michael Creed said the reputation of Irish beef abroad is being put in jeopardy by the two-month old dispute.

Protesters lifted a blockade at Dawn Meats’ Slane plant yesterday while farmers outside other factories are meeting to determine if they’ll continue with their blockades over beef prices.

The number of protestors joining the blockade outside the Liffey Meats plant in Taughmaconnell has continued to increase throughout the week.

Galway students to join global protest in call for action on climate change

Galway Bay fm newsroom:

Students from across Galway will gather at Eyre Square tomorrow in a call for action on climate change (20th).

The protest will get underway at 1pm and will include a climate march of school strikers to the Spanish Arch.

This is one of a series of worldwide school strikes this year with a demonstration in March attracting 1.5 million protestors globally.

The ‘Fridays for Future’ movement began in August 2018, after 15 years old Greta Thunberg sat in front of the Swedish parliament every schoolday for three weeks.

Tomorrow’s protest comes just three days before the UN Climate Action Summit in New York.

Galway medtech Bluedrop Medical set to expand after securing €3.7m in funding

Galway based medical device start-up Bluedrop Medical is set to expand after securing €3.7m.

The company is based at the Innovation Hub at GMIT and is developing a product to help manage one of the complications of diabetes – the diabetic foot.

An initial seed investment of €1.2M was led by HBAN’s MedTech Syndicate – which itself invested €340K in the seed round.

Enterprise Ireland and the Western Development Commission also invested in the funding round along with other members of the investment community.

A €2.5M grant was also awarded through the European Innovation Council.

The firm is set to hire 10 people in the areas of software development, quality and regulatory affairs, clinical trial management and commercial strategy development.
