A Modern Movement has established itself as something of an institution in Galway since broadcaster, DJ and event organiser John O’Connor revived the project over a year ago. Its events have centred around the night’s home – The Loft Venue, above Seven – but 2022 has included a venture to the Mechanics Institute and a June collaboration with other local music facilitators that produced the best DIY Galway festival in recent memory.
In January, A Modern Movement kicks off the new year with two events. On January 14, AMM takes over Áras na nGael for a show with singer-songwriter Myles Manley, Bury Me With My Money and Comrade Hat, before a mouth-watering bill back in The Loft on January 21 that includes Mayo/Galway experimental outfit Nerves, Dublin’s Clay Pigeon Shooting, Cork’s Cardinals and local punk duo YOP.
“Nerves have been one of my favourites for a long while now,” John explains.
“I’ve known the boys for a good few years. They are some of the sweetest, loveliest lads you can know but they’re also absolute monsters on the stage.
“Adam, the drummer, is the politest, nicest little dude – you put him behind a kit and there is an animal in there waiting to be released. Charlie and Kyle are the same. You put them up there and it’s like they’re free – it’s glorious to watch. Having them as a headliner was an absolute no brainer.”
“Clay Pigeon Shooting, the second act coming up from Dublin on the night, are the main support act,” he continues.
“They’re a phenomenal little band. Luke Kavanagh is their bassist and I’ve known him for a while… They’re along the same lines [as Nerves] – noisy, very exciting, very cool. They just sold out a show in the Workman’s.
