IN the history of outstanding individual feats by a Galway sportsperson, what Rossa Ryan achieved in Longchamp on Sunday ranks up there with the best of them.
For the 24-year-old jockey from Corofin landed the most prestigious race on the European flat calendar when steering Bluestocking to a comfortable victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
The well-backed 5/1 Ralph Beckett trained filly was always in the firing line from a favourable draw as Ryan executed the perfect ride to supplement Bluestocking’s triumph in the Prix Vermeille at the same track last month.
Lying second only to Oisín Murphy in the UK jockeys’ championship, Ryan was cheered home in Paris to a third Group 1 success on Bluestocking this season by his proud parents, David and Deirdre, and sister Holly.
