Races accommodation
The Galway Race Committee has done a good work for the annual meeting and for business in the city by its action in going some distance at least so generally made against our hotels two years ago shall be removed.
A number of racing people were actually competing arrangements to run special dining trains to and from the capital each day of the races in order to avoid the extortion so recklessly practiced when last they had the opportunity of visiting Ballybrit.
The Race Committee has secured the following tariff from the Railway, Royal and Imperial Hotels: Breakfast, 4s.; luncheon, 5s.; tea, 2s. 6d.; dinner, 6s.; bed, £1.
The following hotels are charging £1 per night for bed and breakfast: Mahon’s Forster-st.; Bailey’s Eyre-square; The Skeffington Arms, Eglinton Hotel, Salthill; O’Reilly’s Stella Maris, and Kincora.
In the circumstances attendant upon Race Week in Galway, these prices seem not unreasonable; and we trust that the smaller hotels and boarding-houses will do their part to restore the good name of the city and make it a place where visitors can come without fear of unjust extortion.
Later, the work of registering all hotels and boarding-houses should be undertaken by the Urban Council.
