Truth and peace
No single person in Ireland to-day, unless he be deliberately cheating his own conscience and deceiving his neighbours, can plead that he has done wrong because his moral teachers and guides have not kept his mind on the path of justice and truth.
During the last eight months while Ireland has been drenched in fratricidal strife, violence and bloodshed, the voice of the Irish Hierarchy has been ever heard above the din: it has grown increased in volume and insistency, it has brought discipline within the fortunately restricted unruly sections of its own house, and to-day it is bringing peace to the Irish nation, war weary and tortured, and so much in need of rest and recuperation.
The faith of the Irish Bishops in the ultimate good of their own people is being daily justified. A day will come sooner than we expected, when even the Cassandras and the perennial pessimists will be silenced.
The Archbishop of Tuam enunciates so plainly that the least intelligent can understand the principles on which every Christian and civilised State must be founded if it is to survive as such.
“Once a definite form of Government is set up by the people, they are bound to accept it as having come from God.”
