Galway In Days Gone By

Union savings

Whatever criticisms may have been levelled against the scheme of union amalgamation in Co. Galway, few ratepayers will quarrel with the results shown in the report of the County Health Committee.

For the year ended March 2022, the demands of the ten boards of guardians on Galway County Council totalled £103,000. For the first year of amalgamation, the demand of the Board of health, which now administers the old union services, was £75,000.

On Wednesday last the board considered the estimates for the second year of amalgamation – the period which will end in March 1924. The members agreed that the total demand of £64,000, estimated by the secretary, should be sufficient for that year.

Thus, in two years, the central authority in the amalgamation scheme is able to show a reduction of £30,000 in the liabilities of the ratepayers.

The work of the ten unions is now carried on by the central hospital and its auxiliary, the central county home, and the children’s home.

When it is remembered that the charges on the old buildings and on the loans for the new, the pensions of officials, and all the “legacies” left by the old regime have to be met, it will be seen that amalgamation has already achieved something that speaks more eloquently than words.
