No definite plan
One of the difficulties about the progressive experiments of the Galway Urban Council in providing parks and sports grounds for the people is that they have been of a patchwork character and have not followed any definite plan.
The swamp has been converted into a “park” of sorts, and the work has not been completed; another park has been set up at Salthill, and an aeroplane hangar has been erected there at considerable expense without any very definite idea as to how it shall be utilised in the future; the trees at Menlo have been purchased; and more recently the ratepayers’ money was offered for the purchase of Lenaboy Castle and grounds. The offer was not accepted.
There is no co-ordination in all of these plans, and we need not wonder if the ratepayers become a little bewildered. A contributor now makes the very useful suggestion that a sports’ development company should be set up in Galway, and that under the aegis of the municipal authority and in co-operation with it, it should take over all sports’ grounds and develop them for the good of the community.
For instance, a golf links and tennis courts are of considerable advantage to a seaside community, providing very valuable attractions. The golf club at Barna has recently had a considerable accession of members and is, in fact, too small to accommodate them all, in addition to which it is too far away from the city.
