More than 200,000 voters across Galway are registered to go to the polls tomorrow (Friday) as 131 candidates battle it out for a seat on Galway County and City Councils.
At the same time, voters will take their pick of a mammoth 27 candidates in an unprecedentedly large field bidding for one of five seats in the European Parliament Midlands-North West constituency.
Some 79 candidates are chasing a spot on Galway County Council across seven local electoral areas (LEAs), and with just 39 seats up for grabs, there will be more than a few left disappointed on Saturday as counting gets underway in Salthill.
Galway County Council confirmed this week that 151,453 voters are registered to vote in the county – Tuam is the largest of the LEAs with more than 27,000 voters, while Conamara North is the smallest with just under 15,000.
In the city, there are 54,368 voters eligible to take their pick of the 52 candidates seeking a spot among 18 councillors who will be elected over the course of the weekend.
