Serving his final day at Leinster House is Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon, after twenty years in politics.
When he announced he wasn’t going to contest the upcoming election, he cited toxicity in politics as one of the reasons behind that decision.
He was first elected to Galway County Council for the Progressive Democrats in 2004, and was then appointed Senator for the party in 2007.
Since 2011, he’s served as a Fine Gael TD for Galway East.
And speaking today he says while he has no regrets – it is a bittersweet day.
Today also marks the final day for Independent Galway Roscommon TD Denis Naughten – who’s stepping down after almost 30 years at Leinster House.
He was first elected to the Seanad in 1997, and since then has served as a TD in Longford-Roscommon, Roscommon-South Leitrim, and Roscommon Galway.
He was a member of Fine Gael until 2011, when he was removed from the party after voting against the coalition over cuts at Roscommon Hospital.
Speaking in the Dáil, he paid tribute to everyone who’s supported him over the years.
