Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway East TD is staying tight-lipped on an alleged row over a possible block on his return to the position of OPW Minister.
The dispute is said to have arisen as current Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran has indicated he may not give up the position as was widely expected.

When the Fine Gael Government came to power amid an uncertain political landscape in 2016, it was agreed that Deputies Sean Canney and Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran would share the position of OPW Minister.
It was a coin toss that decided that Deputy Canney would take the inaugural term for one year – after which Deputy Moran would step into the junior ministerial role.

NUIG study confirms spiders can transmit harmful antibiotic bacteria through bites

An NUI Galway study has confirmed that spiders can transmit harmful antibiotic bacteria through bites.

A team of zoologists and microbiologists from the university have published their findings in the international journal Scientific Reports.

The research confirms a theory which has been debated among spider and healthcare specialists for many years, and explains a range of symptoms experienced by victims bitten by the invasive noble false widow spider in Ireland over the past decade.

The study shows that not only do spiders carry harmful bacteria, but those germs can be transmitted when a spider uses its fangs to bite.

Meanwhile, the presence of this antimicrobial resistance bacteria can make treating spider bites more difficult.

Co-lead author of the study and PhD student at NUIG’s School of Natural Sciences Neyaz Kahn says the findings are particularly significant for healthcare professionals – to hear more, tune in to Galway Bay fm news on the hour…

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Concerns have been raised over the rise in domestic dispute incidents across the county.

Latest Garda statistics show a 37 percent rise in the number of domestic disputes with 436 recorded in the first 10 months of the year.

Galway West TD Catherine Connolly described the figure as ‘horrific’ at this week’s meeting of the joint policing committee.

She said very often this can concern serious violence and assault and is frightening in a county where there are not enough refuges and safe places for those involved.

Garda Chief Superintendent Tom Curley explained to the meeting that in cases of domestic disputes with no offence disclosed, Gardai check for any orders in place.

They then organise a call-back or series of call-backs and such cases are monitored closely.

He added that if there is a second or third call, the Superintendent has to view the investigation and will issue clear directions.

Deputy Connolly said such cases are a huge concern given the confines placed on many households due to the pandemic – to hear more, tune in to Galway Bay fm news on the hour…
