Galway East first constituency nationwide to declare results in Presidential election
Galway Bay fm newsroom – The first constituencies have started to declare their votes in the Presidential election.
Galway East was the first to declare with Michael D Higgins and Peter Casey getting most of the vote.
The Taoiseach has congratulated Michael D. Higgins on continuing to be President for the next 7 years.
Galway East was the first constituency to officially declare with Michael D Higgins getting 53.4 per cent of the vote in his native county.
Peter Casey polled a strong second with 33 per cent of the vote.
The four other candidates received less than 1,600 votes each
Nationally tallies suggest that Mr Casey will poll in the early 20s while Michael D Higgins will land in the high 50s or early 60s.
Other declarations are expected in the next hour with the final result likely to be early this evening.
Some of the candidates are expected to arrive at Dublin Castle in the next hour.
Peter Casey has already arrived – saying he wants an apology from the Taoiseach today over remarks made during the campaign, encouraging people not to vote for him.
Counting continues in an election Michael D Higgins will comfortably win.

This is one of the highest ever figures at the city public hospital
It’s the third highest number in the country behind Cork with 70 patients on trolleys and Limerick with 107
Yesterday at UHG, elective day case and inpatient adult procedures were postooned due to pressure on beds.
In Portiuncula in Ballinasloe there are a further 8 people waiting on trolleys
Nationally, 647 people are waiting on trolleys in Irish hospitals today

Incidents of hate crime increased in Galway last year

From Galway Bay fm newsroom- There has been a slight increase in reported incidents of hate crime in Galway.
Last year, 22 cases of hate crime and hate related incidents were reported in the county Garda Division – an increase on the 17 reported in 2021.
Half of last year’s incidents in Galway related to race.
Across the country there were 582 reported incidents of such crimes, an increase of almost a third compared to 2021.

Thousands of students expected to attend upcoming open days at Galway universities

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Thousands of students are expected to attend open days at University of Galway and Atlantic Technological University Galway this Saturday (25/03).
There are over 100 talks organised for the University of Galway’s open day from 9am to 3pm.
Student Recruitment Officer, Caroline Duggan says there will be a range of different talks:
